Rugby School holds a unique place in sports history as the birthplace of rugby football. The sport’s origins trace back to 1823 when student William Webb Ellis famously picked up the ball during a football match and ran with it, defying the rules of the time. This act laid the foundation for the development of rugby as a distinct sport.
Today, the school maintains a strong rugby tradition, with students participating in the sport at various levels. The emphasis on teamwork, discipline, and physical fitness inherent in rugby aligns with the school’s broader educational philosophy, promoting holistic development.
